| Strengths: |
Davis is a big, physical corner that likes to hit, and hit hard! He supports the run very well and isn’t afraid of contact. He has good upper and lower body strength for a corner. A freakish athlete who has all the tools you look for. Stays with the receiver well and has great leaping ability to defend the jump ball. Watches the ball with his eyes while sticking with his man, which means he can multitask and still be effective. Jumps the underneath route well to make the interception. Has good ball skills and will get his hands of a lot of balls. Hips are fluid for a corner of his size and he has the awareness at decision-making ability to be a shutdown corner at the next level. Also showed special teams potential as a KR and played on punt block/return team. He is pretty explosive with the ball in his hands. |
| Weaknesses: |
Since he is so aggressive he gambles and will get beat sometimes. He also tackles low a lot, and players at the next level tend to shake and bounce off those kinds of tackles more so his tackling technique needs a little bit of work. Needs to stay low in his backpedal at all times as he has a tendency to get a bit high. He is a very emotional player and I worry that he could get frustrated early at the next level and it could affect his play. He could be a bit of a workout warrior and test well making his stock shoot up the boards. Some team could fall in love with his physical attributes and draft him a few spots earlier than he is worth. |
| Quick Hits: |
Played Cornerback and WR at one of the better football high schools in the Washington DC area. Vontae has good bloodlines; his brother is former Maryland Terrapin and current San Francisco 49er Vernon Davis. Davis has probably the most potential of any of the defensive backs entering this draft, and he could be a shut down corner in less than 3 years if he lands in the right situation. But, he shouldn’t be thrown into a starting situation with a bad pass rush as it could frustrate him. He may not be mentally mature, yet.
