| Strengths: |
Unreal size for a defensive back, Smith is still solid in man and zone coverage. Does a good job anticipating routes and staying with the receiver. Has a knack for getting to the ball at the right time. With his size, he could easily project to safety at the next level. A great matchup for taller WRs. Does a good job diagnosing screen passes and gets to the flats quickly. Great leaping ability and body control. His combination of size and speed make him an effective blitzer, able to leap and bat down the pass if he can't get to the quarterback. |
| Weaknesses: |
Has some trouble opening his hips, turning to run with speedy receviers. Can do a better job with fundamental tackling, though he has the strength the bring down receivers with arm tackles. A better man cover corner than zone corner. Not an ideal amount of play experience, though he was productive during that time. |
| Quick Hits: |
Smith went under the radar for a while until the bowl game against Alabama, where he shut down freshman standout Julio Jones. His size and speed combination makes him an ideal candidate to switch to safety, but his coverage skills keeps him in the conversation to play corner. Could potentially take red zone threats away from an offense. A trash talker that loves to play the game. Played wide receiver in 2006, which explains his ball skills. |
