Interview 1/23

Rey Maualuga
ILB USC Senior
6'1" 249 lbs 40: 4.82 sec
Strengths: An aggressive linebacker, Maualuga loves to get the big hit. Is excellent in run support, plugging holes and getting to the outside. Has good size and bulk for an insider backer. Maualuga plays with a mean streak and uses intimidation on the field. Takes on the block and sheds blockers well to get to the ball carrier. Does a good job reading the quarterback's eyes in zone coverage. Has a knack for being around the ball. Can break down and make the tackle in traffic, but really likes to make the big hit in the open field.
Weaknesses: Can be very over-aggressive at times, over-running plays and taking poor angles. Doesn't match up well in man coverage. Isn't as fast as you'd like. Has a tendency to miss tackles by going for the big hit and not wrapping up. There are concerns with his maturity level as he tends to goof around at times. Was arrested in 2005 for assault, but the charges were eventually dropped. Could improve his skills as a pass rusher, eventhough he wasn't utilized as a blitzer much at USC.
Quick Hits: Has played hot and cold at times, but when he's hot, he's hot! Was the MVP of the Rose Bowl during his junior season. Many question whether Rey can be a 3-down backer in the NFL, and I feel that he can in the right system. Will fit in best as an inside backer in a 3-4, but could also potentially play the Mike backer in a 4-3 defense. Reminds me a bit of Lofa Tatupu coming out of college and could potentially have just as good of a career.
