Top 20
Chris "Beanie" Wells
RB Ohio State Junior
6'1" 225 lbs 40: 4.59 sec
Strengths: Wells has a huge frame for a running back and carries the weight pretty well. He is decently athletic and has good wiggle. Wells has great vision and consistently picks up solid chunks of yards, which will tire a defense. He has above average speed and he will run away from most linebackers, but may not be able to outrun defensive backs. He has a great stiff arm and he knows how to get every possible yard out of each carry. He breaks a lot of tackles and is truly one of those backs that get better with the more carries they get. He is a pretty good pas blocker and can contribute immediately in the NFL. Wells has good balance for a back his size.
Weaknesses: He lacks receiving skills and really needs to work on that. He doesn’t have a second gear, and while his first gear isn’t slow, it could keep him from breaking many long runs in the NFL. I question his lateral quickness, but he should be more of a North-South runner anyway. He always had nagging injuries and those can add up when it comes to big, bruising running backs.
Quick Hits: He compares to a slightly less explosive Jamal Lewis only because he lacks that second gear that Jamal seemed to have when coming out of college. He seems like a very “safe” pick in that the chances of him becoming a complete bust are slim and none. But, the chances of him becoming an All-Pro are less than the other top running backs of this class. He was the 2008 team MVP. Wells grew up in Akron, Ohio. He has ten brothers and sisters.
