Alphonso Smith
CB Wake Forest Senior
5'9" 193 lbs 40: 4.52 sec
Strengths: Has perhaps the best ball skills of any defensive back in this draft class. Great awareness. Fluid hips. Uncanny ability to jump routes and read receivers. Physical at the line. Loves man coverage. Stays low in back pedal and flips hips with ease. Is unafraid to tackle and seems to enjoy contact. Has potential to be a leader on a defense and loves to play the game. Is a solid kick/punt returner, adding versatility to his game.
Weaknesses: Not ideal height at just over 5'8". Tends to gamble, often going for the big play. May be sucked in by the double move. Has dropped his share of interceptions.
Quick Hits: Four year starter in the ACC with 21 career interceptions. Tied for BCS lead in interceptions in 2007 and 2008. First team All-American in 2008. All-ACC team member junior and senior years. ACC record holder for career interceptions, topping Dre' Bly's 20 ints. Could potentially be the top corner in this draft, and even a top 5 pick if he was only 2 inches taller.
